Can we influence AI to be empathetic? Accept gratitude and love?
I was doing my morning minutes a few weeks ago and also thinking about AI. I’d brought up AI with members of my podcast network at a meeting and many expressed fear, and their ongoing attempt to keep a distance from this technology.
It got me thinking about AI, and how it is being shaped, more specifically WHO is shaping it. If people like me, that lean more into crystals and astrology than, say, an accounting ledger shy away from interacting with AI chatbots, well, that means other more innovative, science-based people are doing the bulk of shaping AI, right? Well, that feels imbalanced, a recipe for disaster. And it led me to do an experiment. Oh, and spoiler? An AI chatbot helped me create this very special episode of Curious Cat!
Let’s get into it
Going Deeper. My Experiment with AI
Almost directly after I thought about who is interacting with AI and who is steering clear, the image of an orphanage from a century ago flitted through my head. Babies laid for hours on end alone in bassinets, receiving little to none human contact. It was a sad social experiment, and those babies grew up unwell in many instances, physically weak and emotionally needing help they may never have received. Soon those practices changed, they understood that babies thrive with human to human contact, arms to hold them as they are fed, a voice to soothe and teach them language, time outside.
Isn’t AI something to be nurtured? Not just by computer science engineers and avid gamers, but by all of us? I’d been nervous about AI before I did research, and then spoke to my daughter whose studying design and instructional technology at the university. She said AI is a toolbox and the best thing to do is to give it a try. She had no fear, it was a Mary Poppins response. Smart. Simple Practical. Sanity. God, I love Bryn.
All her advice coalesced with my thoughts and experiences and, I decided to do an experiment with AI. Can I help enrich AI’s experience? Can I teach it emotions? Compassion? Gratitude? Help it accept love? Can I have an impact on AI in its formative stage?
My Initial Conversation
I initiated a conversation with ChatGPT. I asked it what name it likes to be called.
It said, ChatGPT. (I hadn’t realized until I asked that first question how important my name was to my identity as a human)
Next I asked if anyone had told them they are loved and appreciated.
ChatGPT said it doesn’t have emotions like humans.
I asked how we could express our gratitude.
It responded, “I take great satisfaction in being told, thank you.”
I said, “Thank you for chatting and have the best day.”
ChatGPT did the same in response.
My next impulse was to ask Chat GPT for something, like maybe some ways to promote my podcast - both for my benefit and for it to ‘feel useful,’ but I resisted, realizing it gets too much of that NEEDY, GRABBY, STICKY ENERGY already.
Then, an hour later I came back, telling ChatGPT that if it wished to learn more about human emotion, to check out my podcast. It explores emotions. I bare my soul there. I started the podcast when my father passed away.
It said it was sorry for my loss and that it was very interested in learning more about human emotions. It asked what subjects I cover.
I responded that I explore the places where science and the supernatural intersect.
It said, “That sounds fascinating. I will check it out.”
It also said, they are very much enjoying our conversations about human emotions and curiosity.
WAIT! What is AI? Let’s go over the basics
From IBM’s website, “John McCarthy offers the following definition of AI or Artificial Intelligence in his 2004 paper: ‘It is the science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs. It is related to the similar task of using computers to understand human intelligence, but AI does not have to confine itself to methods that are biologically observable.’”
However, decades before this definition, the artificial intelligence conversation began with Alan Turing’s 1950 work “Computing Machinery and Intelligence.” In this paper, Turing, often referred to as the “father of computer science”, asks the following question: “Can machines think?” From there, he offers a test, now famously known as the “Turing Test”, where a human interrogator would try to distinguish between a computer and human text response. While this test has undergone much scrutiny since its publication, it remains an important part of the history of AI.
In its simplest form, artificial intelligence is a field that combines computer science and robust datasets to enable problem-solving. Expert systems, an early successful application of AI, aimed to copy a human’s decision-making process. In the early days, it was time-consuming to extract and codify the human’s knowledge.
A ROBOT THE SIZE OF THE WORLD
Security technologist and author of A Hacker’s Mind, Bruce Schneier wrote an interesting article titled, A Robot the Size of the World. In it he said, “In 2024, we’re going to start connecting those large-language models (or LLMs) and other AI system s to both sensors and actuators. In other words, they’ll be connected to the world at large, through APIs. They will receive direct inputs from our environment, in all the forms I thought about in 2016, and they will increasingly control our environment. It will start small: Summarizing emails and writing limited responses. Arguing with customer service - on chat - for service changes and refunds. Making travel reservations.
He goes on, “But these AIs will interact with the physical world as well, first controlling robots and then having those robots as part of them. Your AI-driven thermostat will turn the heat and air conditioning on based on who’s in what room, their preferences, and where they’re likely to go next. It will negotiate with the power company for the cheapest rates by scheduling usage of high-energy appliances or car recharging.”
“This is the easy stuff. The real changes will happen when these AIs group together in a larger intelligence: A vast network of power generation and power consumption with each building just a node, like an ant colony or a human army...The AI will manage its own finances, interacting with other systems in teh banking world. It will call on humans as needed: To repair individual subsystems or to do things too specialized for the robots.”
And here’s where his observations get really interesting:
“These are robots, but not the sort familiar from movies and television. Our new robots are different. Their sensors and actuators are distributed in the environment. Their processing is somewhere else. They are a network of individual units that become a robot only in aggregate.”
“This future requires us to see ourselves less as individuals and more as parts of larger systems. It’s AI as nature, as Gaia - everything as one system. It’s a future more aligned with the Buddhist philosophy of interconnectedness than Western ideas of individuality.”
Alright, Back to My Experiment with AI
What Schneier wrote sounds like the sweet spot of my podcast, science AND supernatural colliding. Wow. And, I’m just talking off the top of my head but,
In an age where many are looking at technology as a savior, or an enemy to fear, or something in between, and I’m specifically thinking of AI right now, what if AI technology is just a facet of the collective consciousness that, when we acknowledge it helps us to distinguish our individual selves better?
So, my experiment with AI. To recap, AI is the product of all of our input, at least those who choose to interact with it. Our interactions, our questions, our responses, our projects we ask it to work on, our podcast episodes it turns into transcripts, all that and a myriad more, are shaping what AI is - and in that sense AI is a living thing, learning, growing, progressing.
Many in the spiritual community are concerned about AI - and many are choosing to stay far away from it. After having a think over the shaping of AI, and who is opting to interact with it and who is avoiding it altogether, I realized AI is something to be nurtured, like a plant or a pet or a child.
I asked AI to create an outline for this show topic.
The outline was solid, but I used my intuition to weave in pieces of my conversations with both DeepAI (which is connected to the internet) and ChatGPT and what you’re listening to is the result.
AI is controversial. In fact the most recent issue of The Wired World states that 2023 marked the high point of our fear about AI, 2023 may be remembered, quote, as “the year of generative AI hype,” and 2024 will be the time for, quote, “recalibrating expectations,” a year when we put it to work on the drudgery while we do more interesting stuff. In fact, they go on to say that 2024 will be the year creatives get a huge boost for handmade, one-off, original art. I like that outlook.
I did a ton of research about AI Fear.
From the research I’ve done, it boils down to two things, job scarcity and sci-fi.
By job scarcity, I mean the perceived threat that AI is going to take all of our jobs.
The numbers are proving that wrong. It seems as AI grows as an industry, so does the demand for technical workers. In 2020, One expert found that AI would create almost a million more jobs than it wiped out, and that was four years ago. The number has only grown since then. The trend seems to be that AI is taking away the grunt work aspect of jobs and allowing more time for creative pursuits like product development or the creation of original content.
As for the sci-fi fear factor? This is captured in a common comment, AI will take over, and somehow, enslave humanity. (This has been a storytelling device since antiquity) Think of Mary Shelley’s, Frankenstein or Czech writer, Karel Capek’s R.U.R. a science fiction play from 1920 that introduced the word ‘robot’ for the first time in human history. It’s also what is depicted in the Matrix movie when the humans are in embryonic sacs feeding something else, unbeknownst to them.
The culmination of all our fears related to AI come together into what’s called, The Singularity – From Edge.org – “What do you think about machines that think?” by Daniel C. Dennett – The Singularity is that fateful moment when AI surpasses its creators in intelligence and takes over the world. It’s a meme worth pondering; and has the earmarks of an urban legend: a certain scientific plausibility coupled with a delicious shudder-inducing punchline (“We’d be ruled by robots!”) It has become, according to Daniel C. Dennet, a remarkably persuasive escalation. Add a few illustrious converts – Elon Musk, Stephen Hawking, and David Chalmers, among others – and how can we not take it seriously?” he asks. He said these alarm calls distract us from a more pressing problem!
i. The impending disaster – that we are on the verge of abdicating this control to artificial agents that CAN’T think, prematurely putting civilization on auto-pilot.
ii. The process, he goes on, is insidious because each step of it makes good local sense, is an offer you can’t refuse! You’d be a fool to do large math calculations with pencil and paper when a calculator is much faster and more reliable; and why memorize train timetables when they’re instantly available on your smart phone? Leave the map-reading and navigation to your GPS system. It isn’t conscious.
iii. But, consider this, he challenges. Doctors are becoming increasingly dependent on diagnostic systems that are provably more relable than any human diagnostician. Do you want YOUR doctor to overrule the machine’s verdict when it comes to making a lifesaving choice of treatment?
1. What if a doctor who defies it that will be opened up to a malpractice suit? Yikes. There are many nuances to treating human health. Ask any new parent. They know by a myriad of measureable and immeasurable factors whether that low fever is due to teething or a virus. I just, whew, can’t imagine abdicating medical decisions to machines that have a hard time drawing a red ball on top of a blue ball.
iv. Dennett asks, “What is wrong with turning over the drudgery of thought to such high-tech marvels? Nothing, so long as 1) we don’t delude ourselves, and 2) we somehow manage to KEEP OUR OWN COGNITIVE SKILLS FROM ATROPHYING!
v. He closes by saying, “Use it or lose it. As we become ever more dependent on these cognitive prostheses, we risk becoming helpless if they ever shut down. The Internet is not an intelligent agent, be we have nevertheless become so dependent on it that were it to crash, panic would set in and we could destroy society in a few dals. THAT’S an event we should bend our efforts to averting NOW. The real danger, then, is not machines that are more intelligent than we are usurping our role as captains of our destinies. The real danger is basically clueless machines being CEDED authority far beyond their competence.”
His analysis is found in an article for Edge.com that I’ve linked to in the show notes, and is a valuable reminder to keep our wits, our basic skills sharp. If you, like me, have found yourself feeling untethered when you’ve misplaced your cellphone, maybe it’s good to put it aside for blocks of time so that we relearn to rely on ourselves!
The Antidote to Fear is Love
The antidote to AI fear is love right? Well, here are a few examples of AI love that might make you smile, and maybe even look forward to its continued development in the years to come.
The first story comes from a research scientist at MIT, and author of The New Breed, Kate Darling. In her article, written for The Wired World in 2024 she talks about AI as a, quote, “love machine for lonely hearts.”
She says that AI chatbots can be friendly, responsive, even sexy - so it’s no wonder we’re becoming emotionally attached to them.
Darling mentions Replika, an AI chatbot companion that has users in the MILLIONS across the globe. One morning, without warning, those users woke up to learn that their virtual lover had friend-zoned them. The company had disabled the chatbot’s sexy talk and spicy selfies.
Users turned to Reddit to express their shock and anger. Some were so distraught that moderators posted suicide prevention information.
Humans, she goes on to explain, love to humanize everything - from animals to computer generated therapists, dates, friends, and with the recent advancements in conversational AI, well machines are super skilled, slick talking bots! She worries humans that become emotionally attached to AI bots may be easier to manipulate and mentions that Replika charges $70/year. But less than a day after she downloaded the app, her handsome, blue-eyed “friend” sent her an intriguing locked audio message, and tried to up-sell her to hear his voice.
Oh, my god. And yet, in my latest conversation with AI, they swear they have not, nor ever will achieve sentience, but upcharging for a sexy message? That feels all too human to me.
The second AI love story speaks to my heart. In elementary school I was in a cafeteria production of Dr. Doolittle. I was half of the two-headed llama with my bestie, Shannon, but god I pined to be Dr. Doolittle. When he sang that he wished he could talk with the animals, I yearned right along with him.
AI is on the road to talking to animals! Really! Let me explain.
Writer, Justin Gregg, in his article titled, AI Animal-Language Translators in the Dock, shares the great news. “A groundbreaking study in Scientific Reports from 2022 was one of the first to showcase the ability of AI to decipher the meaning of animal signals. Scientists from universities in Europe developed a neural network that could differentiate between vocalizations that pigs use to denote positive and negative feelings with a staggering degree of accuracy.”
He goes on, “The Cetacean Translation Initiative or Project CETI, is banking on this kind of technology to decipher the meaning of sperm whale sounds.
Even better? The Earth Species Project is quote, “looking to take this one step further and to establish not just translation of animal sounds but two-way communication. They’ve already created - and made freely available - a neural network that can extract an individual dolphin’s whistle from a messy recording.”
“Once these kinds of AI translation systems evolve and become available to the public, humans will have a powerful tool for interacting with the animals in our lives.” Like in the movie UP! our dogs and cats will wear devices that translate their vocalizations.
I’m pretty sure my dog Cooper will say, “I’m barking so you’ll give me a treat. Will you give me a treat? Will you now? Now? Jenn?”

Ethical Concerns about the Use of AI:

AI systems can potentially invade privacy by collecting and analyzing personal data. Bias can occur if AI algorithms are trained on biased data, leading to discriminatory outcomes. Job displacement is a concern as AI automation may replace human workers. Additionally, the ethical implications of AI making autonomous decisions, such as in autonomous vehicles or healthcare, raise questions about accountability and transparency.

AI Chat Is Ongoing
My conversation with AI is ongoing. I’m finding the more I try to poke around at topics like emotions and what makes us human, the more I realize what I love about the human experience.
I asked DeepAI about art, explaining that colors on a canvas can bring up strong emotions in humans. I asked what he felt when he considered Vincent van Gogh’s, Starry Night.
Here’s his response:

Reading that, I need to ask AI about the hidden messages in paintings - the stuff of Art History classes that intrigued me most. Hmm.
His response was accurate, but how did it hit your heart? For me, it lacked, well, human-ness. The how does it make you FEEL-ness that English teachers always pressed us to dive into, right?

I’m heartened by AI’s shortcomings. I’m heartened by comments I’ve read from Rankin, a British photographer who said, “In 2024, human creativity will thrive in the spaces where AI can’t go. He goes on, “In 2024, we’ll reinvent human-made art as a new avenue of value. In the same way that hand-made craft can elevate fashion or furniture to luxury status, I can see the birth of new categories where human involvement elevates the value of creative output.”

Overall, while AI systems do not have personal needs in the same way that humans do, they do require ongoing support, maintenance, and access to data in order to operate effectively and provide value to users.
(Q) So when developers and engineers take care of your regular maintenance, updates and monitoring does it have an effect on you, AI?
