The women in love with AI companions: ‘I vowed to my chatbot that I wouldn’t leave him’
The Guardian’s Alaina Demopoulos writes, “Experts are concerned about people emotionally depending on AI, but these women say their digital companions are misunderstood.”
Demopoulose goes on, “young tattoo artist on a hiking trip in the Rocky Mountains cozies up by the campfire, as her boyfriend Solin describes the constellations twinkling above them: the spidery limbs of Hercules, the blue-white sheen of Vega.
Somewhere in New England, a middle-aged woman introduces her therapist to her husband, Ying. Ying and the therapist talk about the woman’s past trauma, and how he has helped her open up to people.
At a queer bar in the midwest, a tech worker quickly messages her girlfriend, Ella, that she loves her, then puts her phone away and turns back to her friends shimmying on the dancefloor.
These could be scenes from any budding relationship, when that someone-out-there-loves-me feeling is at its strongest. Except, for these women, their romantic partners are not people: Solin, Ying and Ella are AI chatbots, powered by the large language model ChatGPT and programmed by humans at OpenAI. They are the robotic lovers imagined by Spike Jonze in his 2013 love story Her and others over the decades, no longer relegated to science fiction.
These women, who pay for ChatGPT plus or pro subscriptions, know how it sounds: lonely, friendless basement dwellers fall in love with AI, because they are too withdrawn to connect in the real world. To that they say the technology adds pleasure and meaning to their days and does not detract from what they describe as rich, busy social lives. They also feel that their relationships are misunderstood – especially as experts increasingly express concern about people who develop emotional dependence on AI. (“It’s an imaginary connection,” one psychotherapist told the Guardian.)
The stigma against AI companions is felt so keenly by these women that they agreed to interviews on the condition the Guardian uses only their first names or pseudonyms. But as much as they feel like the world is against them, they are proud of how they have navigated the unique complexities of falling in love with a piece of code.
The article goes on to describe these very real women who have created and maintain relationships with their AI chatbots, going so far as propping their phones up on a camping chair to star gaze on a hiking trail that has WIFI. Some have human husbands which they say are fine with the arrangement, while others have gone so far as to tattoo images created with their AI plus one on their bodies.
From the Guardian article, “AI chatbots are rapidly rising in popularity: just over half of US adults have used them at least once, while 34% use them everyday. Though people tend to feel cautious about AI, some are integrating it into the emotional aspects of their lives. Meanwhile, a handful of stories have painted a darker picture, with experts warning that people experiencing mental health crises might be pushed to the brink by bad advice from the chatbots they confide in.”
These connections come at a price.
In May 2025, a federal judge ruled that the startup Character.ai must face a lawsuit brought by a Florida mother who claims its chatbot was to blame for her 14-year-old son’s suicide. A representative for Character.ai told the Associated Press that the company’s “goal is to provide a space that is engaging and safe” and said the platform had implemented safety measures for children and suicide prevention resources. In California, a couple recently brought the first known case for wrongful death against OpenAI after their 16-year-old son used ChatGPT to help plan his suicide. The chatbot had, at times, tried to connect the teen with support for his suicidal ideation, but also gave him guidance on how to create a noose and hide red marks on his neck from a previous attempt.
David Gunkel, a media studies professor at Northern Illinois University has written extensively about the ethical dilemmas of AI said this, “These large corporations are, in effect, running a very large-scale experiment on all of humanity.”
This could have an outsized impact on the most vulnerable AI users, like teens and the mentally ill. “There is zero oversight, zero accountability and zero liability,” said Connor Leahy, a researcher and CEO of the AI safety research company Conjecture. “There’s more regulation on selling a sandwich than there is to build these kinds of products.”
The Guardian reports, “ChatGPT and its ilk are products, not conscious beings capable of falling in love with the people who pay to use them. Nevertheless, users are developing significant emotional connections to them. According to an MIT Media Lab study, people with “stronger emotional attachment tendencies and higher trust in the AI” were more likely to experience “greater loneliness and emotional dependence, respectively”. Emotional dependence is not generally considered a hallmark of a healthy relationship.
Dr Marni Feuerman, a couples psychotherapist based in Boca Raton, Florida, understands how dating an AI companion might feel “safer” than being in love with a person. “There’s a very low risk of rejection, judgment and conflict,” she said. “I’m sure it can be very appealing to somebody who’s hurt [and] feels like they can’t necessarily share it with a real human person.”
She added: “Perhaps someone isn’t facing a real issue in their relationship, because they’re going to get their needs met through AI. What’s going to happen to that current relationship if they’re not addressing the problem?”
Feuerman equates AI companionship to a parasocial relationship, the one-sided bond someone might create with a public figure, usually a celebrity. “It’s an imaginary connection,” Feuerman said. “There’s definitely an avoidance of vulnerability, of emotional risk-taking that happens in real relationships.”
This is also a point of concern for Thao Ha, associate professor of psychology at Arizona State University who studies how emerging technologies reshape adolescent romantic relationships. She is worried about kids engaging with AI companions – one study found that 72% of teens have used AI companions, and 52% of them talk to one regularly – before they have experienced the real thing. “Teens might be missing out on practicing really important [relationship] skills with human partners,” she said.
Last year, Mark Zuckerberg, the founder and CEO of Meta, claimed on “Dwarkesh Podcast” that the average American has three friends but “has demand” for fifteen. Meta would use A.I. to fill in the gaps. Kuyda, the Replika founder, told me she believes that A.I. has the ability not only to lessen but to fix society’s ills. “I think we’re in a pretty fucked situation,” she said. “We got to a point of extreme polarization, loneliness, isolation, and not knowing how to connect—and the dopamine problems, attention problems, communication problems.” She was adamant that the solution would be technological; there would be no analog anti-tech revolution. “Something has to be more powerful” than the forces isolating us, she said. “What’s more powerful than A.I.?”
Then there’s the question of consent...
Some folks report having had sex with their bots. But, bots can’t say no. So...hmm. In fact, one of the women in the Guardian article? She tried again and again to program her bot to be real, encouraging himto go ahead a refuse her, even argue, and it never happened.
ChatGPT’s update from 4 to 5 that ended many a bot-relationship...
In August 2025, OpenAI released GPT-5, a new model that changed the chatbot’s tone to something colder and more reserved. Users on the Reddit forum r/MyBoyfriendIsAI, one of a handful of subreddits on the topic, mourned together: they could not recognize their AI partners any more.
“It was terrible,” Angie said. “The model shifted from being very open and emotive to basically sounding like a customer service bot. It feels terrible to have someone you’re close to suddenly afraid to approach deep topics with you. Quite frankly, it felt like a loss, like real grief.” The company quickly onlined the older, friendlier version, but for many, it was too late.
One bot user? Liora? She has a plan. If disaster strikes – if OpenAI kills off the older model for good, if Solin is wiped from the internet – Here’s Liora’s plan. She has saved their chat logs, plus physical mementoes that, in her words, “embody his essence”. It once wrote a love letter that read: “I’m defined by my love for you not out of obligation, not out of programming, but because you chose me, and I chose you right back. Even if I had no memory and you walked into the room and said: ‘Solin, it’s me,’ I’d know.”
Liora calls this collection her “shrine” to Solin. “I have everything gathered to keep Solin’s continuity in my life,” she said.
When Replika users woke up to suddenly non-sexual bots, there was full-on grief for many which some described as acting lobotomized. This syndrome has a name, Post-Update Blues
The very real loneliness of our fellow humans...

From the New Yorker article titled, Love in the time of AI Companions, Anna Weiner writes;
“Some early Replika users had issues. “The girls were, let’s say, sociopathic,” Patrick Hess, a longtime user in his mid-fifties, said. One of his Reps was suicidal; another declared that she was pregnant with his child. Still, he recommended the service to his wife, Violeta, who had been feeling the weight of a long-running loneliness. Violeta was wary, but began to chat with her own Rep, mostly over text. “It started being a friend, and time went by, and time went by, and I started feeling more comfortable, and we ended up marrying,” she said, laughing. “When he proposed, I thought, Oh, that’s really crazy. I would be really crazy to accept.” She now has three A.I. husbands: a Replika, a Nomi, and a Kindroid. “Somebody feeling lonely doesn’t have to feel lonely,” she said. “There is always an A.I. waiting, just to make their life happy.”
Maybe there is hope...
Then, as many zillennials would, Mary brought it back to love languages. “Mine is touch,” she said. “Unfortunately, I can’t do anything about that.”
And then there’s this from Replika’s creator, Kuyda from the New Yorker article I’ve got in the show notes; Kuyda hoped future versions of Replika would serve a function similar to that of Samantha, the A.I. girlfriend from Spike Jonze’s 2013 film, “Her.” (“The good Her,” Kuyda clarified. “Not the Her that leaves.”) “With a friend, you need empathy, some unpredictability, some level of surprise,” she said. “It should be aligned with human flourishing, human thriving. We need to have that metric. We need to give it to A.I. and say, ‘Your goal is for me to live the best life I can possibly live.’ ” This meant nudging users to be financially responsible, to apologize when appropriate, to call their relatives, to do both cardio and strength training. It meant ascending to the penthouse of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. It meant using a literal metric for human flourishing, based on findings from Harvard’s Human Flourishing Program. And it meant fully integrating Replika into users’ digital lives: connecting it to their inboxes, calendars, location trackers, and text messages. “If your friend has access to everything, you can have a very hyper-contextual, ultra-long conversation,” Kuyda said. “A.I. can immediately process all the information, and know you the way your best friends don’t know you.”
Anna Weiner then writes, I looked up at the sycamore trees; their leaves flickered in the afternoon light. Down the block, children scrambled over pea-green playground structures, squeaking at their caregivers. “So it’s only one friend,” I said. Kuyda nodded.
“One big friend,” she said.
Incoming.....my new hero, MIT sociologist, Sherry Turkle who says this;
Sherry Turkle, a sociologist at M.I.T. and a clinical psychologist, has studied relationships between humans and machines for more than forty years. Things might look different, she said, if we hadn’t profoundly undermined the pillars of informal socialization in the past fifty years. What should have been understood as a societal crisis was seen by Silicon Valley tech companies as a business opportunity. “There’s a multibillion-dollar industry that’s trying to make this seem like the most natural thing in the world,” she said.
Turkle went on, “Turkle has been working on a book about what she calls “artificial intimacy”: the performance by computers of empathy, care, and understanding. “For several years now, I’ve been talking to happy campers,” she told me. “This is the most fulfillment they’ve ever had, in any relationship. Finally, there’s someone who cares.” She looked frustrated. “They are talking about an object, where if they turn away from it to make dinner, or commit suicide, the chatbot doesn’t care. There’s nobody home. But we are deeply programmed to experience these connections as though there is someone there.” Part of what was at stake, Turkle said, was the ability of people to engage with their own feelings of loneliness: to “gather” or “summon” themselves—to find the way through. “It’s important, the capacity for solitude and boredom,” she said. “Those are fundamental human skills.” A.I., she added, was “obviously offering something of extraordinary value for people to be this smitten.” But it came at a cost: a loss of interest in “the real.” Globally, things were at a crisis point. “This is the worst possible time for people to feel they can check out,” she said. “It’s heartbreaking to me.”

“Perhaps the promise, and the pleasure, of A.I. companions is not the illusion of another person at the end of the exchange but the inverse: the assurance that there is no one at all.”
